Pre-Conference Dinner

Death Over Dinner

Join us for a very special evening with our guest, Dennis Haskell, as we talk about death over dinner and enjoy the stunning outdoor ambience of the poolside marquee at the Joondalup Resort.

Dennis Haskell is renowned as a strong proponent of Australian literature. He is a poet, critic and academic; Emeritus Professor/Senior Honorary Research Fellow, School of English and Cultural Studies at University Western Australia. He is currently Chair of the Board of writingWA. Among his many accomplishments, Dennis is the recipient of the Western Australia Premier’s Prize for Poetry and the A.A. Phillips Prize for a distinguished contribution to Australian Literature. In 2015 he was made a Member of the Order of Australia.

His eighth book of poetry, Ahead of Us, is dedicated to his wife Rhonda, who died after a six year illness with cancer in 2012. His book contains poems of love, of two people forging a partnership together and of the inevitable end of that partnership when one person dies. It is a celebration of life and the fragile thread that holds us together. Dennis will share his experience of journeying with Rhonda into what he calls ‘that other country’ - the domain of cancer where he and Rhonda became unwilling travellers.

You can listen to a recent podcast of a conversation with Dennis at the 2016 Margaret River Readers and Writers Festival in WA here.

We will be using the Dying to Talk  discussion starter tool kit produced by Palliative Care Australia to talk about how we want to be cared for at the end of life. For more useful resources, please click on the images below:
